  • Why Woke? Benefits of a plant based diet

More than just a name, its a movement

Woke. Awareness. Eyes open to what’s going on around us.

In our context we are referring to being aware of what you are putting into your body. Enlightenment comes in many forms. Ours comes in all natural, vegan, small batch cookies that taste magical, have a low glycemic-index and are made with sustainably sourced ingredients.

With assistance from our in house  Integrative Nutrition Health Coach Stephanie Hanley (www.myhealthshift.com) , we will break down how we are different and why it matters to you!

    100% Plant Based

It doesn’t matter what nutritional or dietary theory you dig in to, everyone knows and experts agree, that we need to eat more plants. Eating a rainbow of low glycemic index and nutrient dense vegetables and fruits should be the primary focus of any diet. Google it. Ask Alex. Hit up Siri. It’s all true.

    Soy Free

Soy contains phytoestrogen. Phytoestrogen is used as a defense mechanism in soybeans to keep them from being consumed by predators. In small doses within your plant based diet, phytoestrogens act as an effective antioxidant. But, when consumed in excess, as is the case in the Standard American Diet, phytoestregens can inhibit muscle gain and impair fat loss.

High consumption of soy phytoestrogens has been linked to:

    Increased risk of breast cancer

    Loss of bone mass

    Depression

    Decreased sex drive

    Impaired thyroid function

    Increased body fat

    Impaired blood sugar control

    Low Glycemic

Picking good sources of carbohydrates can help you control your blood sugar and your weight. Eating healthier carbohydrates can help prevent a host of chronic conditions, especially diabetes, but it can also ward off heart disease and various cancers.

One way to live healthier is to consistently choose foods that are lower on the glycemic index

    Dairy Free

People follow a dairy-free diet for different reasons, but for most people, they’re searching for relief from digestive issues, bloating, skin problems and respiratory conditions that come from eating dairy products.

Another thing to consider is that commercial raised dairy cows probably ate a diet of genetically modified corn and soy while confined in a very tight environment.

    Gluten free Vegan Selections

There are many health benefits for removing gluten from your diet. Though it’s necessary for those of us with Celiac- it can come with big benefits for all of us - when it comes to health. A gluten-free diet can improve energy, reduce inflammation, and ease digestive symptoms like gas, bloating or diarrhea.

For others, going gluten-free could even be the key to reducing behavioral issues and improving symptoms of and irritable bowel syndrome
